While the images may seem convincing at first glance, most scientists say they&#8217;re looking at something much more ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>The story began <em><strong>William Lomoser<\/strong><\/em>An image taken by a professor emeritus at Ohio University was shared. <strong>NASA<\/strong> <strong>rover<\/strong>. He claimed that certain shapes on Mars&#8217; surface resembled insects and even reptiles, pointing to the wing, leg, and body structures he described.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Claim based on the shape of the rover photo<\/h2>\n<p><em>William Lomoser<\/em> His argument was built entirely on visual interpretation. He said the images show a variety of insect-like forms, some of which appear to have separate wings or separate bodies. Credit: William Romoser<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>He even suggested that some of these forms might be able to move or fly, noting that he interpreted this as follows: <strong>wing-like structure<\/strong> and <strong>distinct features<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" class=\"icon icon-quote\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-quote\"\/><\/svg><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Numerous photographs show images of parts of the arthropod&#8217;s body being removed from their surroundings, along with legs, antennae and wings, and some even show one of the insects plummeting before pulling up just before impacting the ground,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the discussion stops there. There is <strong>No physical samples<\/strong>, <strong>No chemical traces<\/strong>just shapes that look familiar when you look at them a certain way.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">the brain inputs what it wants to see<\/h2>\n<p>Many researchers are not convinced. Instead, they point out that <strong>pareidolia<\/strong>the tendency to see recognizable patterns in random visuals. <em>david madison<\/em> The Oregon State University professor explained that this happens even among experts. Madison said the supposed insects are well within the range of what would be expected from normal rocks and shadows.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" class=\"icon icon-quote\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-quote\"\/><\/svg><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think there are insects on Mars. The photos in the press release you sent are completely unconvincing, as they are within the range of what would be expected from the countless non-insect objects photographed at low resolution by Marsscape,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s much more parsimonious to assume that the chunks are just rocks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get a big picture image of the universe<\/h2>\n<p>For scientists like <em>Nina Lanza<\/em> At Los Alamos National Laboratory, it&#8217;s not just what you see that matters, but how it&#8217;s presented. She pointed out that cropped images without scale are misleading. She said this is not a reliable way to assess possible life, as indicated by the same source.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" class=\"icon icon-quote\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-quote\"\/><\/svg><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re little clips of a big image, and there&#8217;s no scale bar&#8230; You can imagine all sorts of shapes in there. It&#8217;s not a good way to do this kind of evaluation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are also broader concerns. Big claims like this can stick in people&#8217;s minds, even if they are later challenged. In this case, the original press release is: <strong>It was eventually deleted<\/strong>no further comments were shared.
