This is because only the male can fly and is therefore confined to the nest.

Fireflies (hidden terminal) Flashes to attract companions. Females emit a single flash to attract males, and males emit multiple flashes to attract females.

During a study in China’s Wuhan province, a team of scientists noticed something strange. Spiders don’t necessarily eat male fireflies right away. Additionally, the male firefly caught in the nest appeared to glow like the female.

This is a clear advantage for spiders. Other males come to the nest thinking they are flying to their mates. That means more food for spiders.

The researchers tested whether spiders were somehow manipulating fireflies’ behavior and found that spiders usually bite when fireflies become entangled in their webs. This suggests that the firefly’s venomous bite may somehow cause behavioral changes in the firefly.

assassin spider

This aptly named arachnid stalks its prey (other spiders) for days on a silky dragline, then walks unnoticed into its web and seductively rips the thread to ensure its prey’s death.

And it has long fang-like jaws, which the predator uses not only to pierce his quarry from a distance, but also to hold the victim at arm’s length, so to speak, so that he cannot bite before the assassin’s venom takes effect.

But while assassins certainly sound scary, those with arachnophobia can sleep in peace.
