One of the best things about house pets is that few people expect them to be intelligent. Although some owners sometimes train their dogs harshly, most of us are perfectly happy with our friendly, silly pets as long as they love us unconditionally and like to snuggle. But every once in a while, they surprise us and reveal just how smart they really are.
When we look at the wider animal world, most people have no idea how intelligent some species are. Honestly, it’s daunting.
A recent viral Reddit thread asked people about the “creepiest” signs of intelligence they’d ever seen. Although the prompt didn’t identify the animal, countless users agreed the moment they witnessed an animal do something jaw-droppingly clever. It can even make you feel a little anxious.
1. Dog Empath
“When my daughter was a baby, I was walking my dog, and I had one dog that understood everything I said. … If she didn’t want to do something, like cross the street to go to the trash can, I’d explain why it was necessary and she would cooperate.”
One time, she was getting annoyed because I was not feeling well and was walking very slowly. She kept tugging on the leash until I finally told her I wasn’t feeling well. She quickly took me to a bench and sat there calmly for about 10 minutes before taking me home again. ”
Dogs don’t speak English, but they understand a lot more than you think. The smartest people can learn hundreds of words, and many can even recognize when you are speaking gibberish (or another language). They are also very good at sensing human nonverbal cues.
When you put it all together, it can seem like they understand everything you’re saying.
2. Number Crow
“I’ve been feeding this family of five crows for years. They’ve gotten used to me enough that they even come to get treats while I’m sitting next to the food. I can use their own whistle to call them, and they make a rattling sound (like a Predator sound) to thank me for feeding them.”
Late one night I heard this scary loud screech. That woke me up and I ran outside to see what was going on. There was a man trying to break into the window of my house, and five crows were dive-bombing him, screaming as fast as they could. he ran away. …So I think there’s a crow now. ”
Crows are not only cunning, but they can also be your best buds if you handle them well. According to MIT Technology Review“A 2020 study published in the journal Science found that crows can think about their thoughts. Crows can also recognize individual human faces, associate them with friendliness or danger, and pass on that knowledge to their mates.”
If you remain calm about the murder of a crow in your hometown, rumors may spread.
3. Mysterious Crow
“I was horrified to see a crow solve a puzzle box within seconds of looking at it once. It felt like they were actually thinking things through. Events like this show us that some animals are much smarter than we usually give them credit for.”
Crows are thought to be as intelligent as a 5- to 7-year-old human child. Not only can they make friends, but they can also invent and use tools, solve puzzles, and sometimes count. No matter how you look at it, they’re some of the smartest animals in the world, and they might be roaming around your backyard right now.
4. Magpie Truce
“As I grew up, I ended up working very close to my family home, where I had lived since I was born. Magpies attack this area all summer long, which can be scary for people who don’t know.
There was an injured magpie at work that we had been feeding and caring for for years. Once it was well enough to roam, it “told” all the other magpies in the area and since then, about 10 years ago, all the magpies in the area have stopped attacking us working in the store again. And Alfred the Magpie used to fly next to me as I rode my bike to work. And on the way home, I wanted to make sure I was safe. This is so insane. ”
Magpies are notorious for being territorial and “swooping”, but like crows, they can remember human faces. They can form strong bonds with humans who are friendly and helpful.
5. The dog needed a thumb
“My dog started barking at the door, so I opened it to see what was going on. My border collie is sitting there waiting. When I go to check on him, he gets up, walks a little bit away, sits down and looks at me. I run after him and this continues until I get in front of my neighbor’s house.”
Cory looks at the doorbell. I’ll ring it. No one answers. Cory stares at the door. There is no answer when I knock. The dog got up and walked towards the side gate, looked at me, then looked at the latch. I open the gate for the dog. The dog walked into the backyard, turned around, sat down and looked at me, then looked at the open gate. I close the gate and watch the dog relax. The dog used me as a thumb and wouldn’t even let me pet him. ”
Dogs often ask humans for help when they find themselves in a difficult situation, this is in their nature. When their owners or friendly humans are not nearby, they may seek help from strangers. It’s clearly a genius social brand.
6. Sneaky Octopus
“We heard stories of octopuses that would jump out of their tanks at night and eat crabs in neighboring tanks. The aquarium staff couldn’t figure out why the crabs kept getting eaten until they saw the octopuses on surveillance cameras. Eerily enough, the octopuses knew to put the lid back on and go back to their tank. So they probably understood the need to deceive.”
Variations of this story have been circulating for years. It is also a plot point in a popular novel. Amazingly bright creatures.
Although the original source is difficult to verify, the story is not all that far-fetched. Octopuses are extremely talented escape artists who can solve puzzles, unscrew bottles, and navigate mazes. They also seem to have a good understanding of what other octopuses (prey, humans, and other octopuses) are thinking, and have been known to intentionally deceive.
7. Silent Border Collie
“I was at a party, and in the middle of a conversation, I suddenly realized that we were all standing uncomfortably close to each other. My friend’s border collie slowly led us all to the center of the room.”
Border Collies have a built-in herding instinct. Needless to say, some owners may be surprised at how eerily good they are.
“You can never remove the herding instinct from your Border Collie, and you should never want to,” writes trainer Sarah Hedary of Dingbat Dog Training.
8. Hamdog
“My father’s German shepherd figured out how to open the refrigerator, take out a piece of ham, and then close it again. We caught him because my father thought my brother was sneaking food at night, so he set up a camera. The dog looked directly at the camera once, but never did it again while we were in the house.”
Just like octopuses, dogs understand deception. They can sometimes tell when humans are lying to them, and have even been shown to be able to distinguish between honest mistakes and outright lies. On the contrary, they themselves can also be very sneaky.
9. The dog came home
Move and Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.
“It’s not necessarily creepy, but there’s no way to explain it. I’ve mentioned this before, but when my dog was about 6 months old, I took him to the groomer for the first time. My wife took him in a taxi and he just lay on the floor the whole time and couldn’t see out. She never went to the area. It was about 4 miles away from the apartment, and the apartment itself was on the 3rd floor of an apartment building. About 30 minutes later I got a call saying my dog had collapsed, jumped the gate and ran away from the groomer, everyone was making a fuss, she was a Labradoodle but still a puppy, and she was alone and scared in the middle of the day in central London.
We started searching, but my wife was inconsolable so I asked her to wait for me at home. When my wife arrived home, the dog was sitting on the third floor by our front door, happily cooling the beans like Larry. She jumped a four-foot-tall fence, walked out a locked door, drove four miles through central London traffic, crossed at least one motorway, took streets she had never been to or seen, and was home about 25 minutes after leaving the groomer. ”
Believe it or not, dogs can follow scents for miles. In one widely reported case, a dog returned to its owner after an 11-mile journey. said Bonnie Beaver, executive director of the American Veterinary Behavioral Society and a professor at Texas A&M University. time“Eleven miles is actually not that long for a dog.”
10. Cozy puppy
“My dog knows how to turn my wife’s heating blanket on, and he knows he likes it on setting 2. When my wife wants it warmer or colder, he changes to setting 2.”
It’s amazing all the different things dogs can learn. They may also be able to operate appliances, make phone calls, and use heating blankets. The creepiest part is that dogs may know things that their owners don’t. Just like humans, dogs can learn very well through observation.
It’s one thing to watch documentaries or learn in school about the wonders of dolphins, crows, and even regular domestic dogs. But seeing amazing displays of animal intelligence with your own eyes can be downright creepy, in the coolest of ways.
