Germans have followed the plight of the sea monster, dubbed Timmy by newspapers, on live news tickers, TV screens and influencers’ YouTube and TikTok channels, but some are worried about what its epic struggle says about the nation’s collective psyche.
Sociologist Christian Stegbauer said whales are highly intelligent and social animals that are subject to human “projection” and that people, especially on social media, engage in “a kind of competition to see who values this animal the most.”
While the rescuers exhaust themselves in the cold water, the adventure also features a bitter rift between a veterinarian and a self-styled “whale whisperer,” a fundraising scam, and an arcane attempt to heal the whales through chants.
The drama began on March 23 when the 13-metre (more than 40-foot) whale washed ashore on a sandbar in the Baltic Sea at Timmendorfer Strand, a seaside resort near Lübeck, far from its Atlantic habitat. He had the remains of a fishing net in his mouth and was in poor health.
Since then, a series of rescue efforts have been carried out involving volunteers, environmental groups, maritime police, excavator workers and billionaire sponsors, but hopes were quickly dashed as the whale zigzagged away and eventually washed ashore again.
German media broadcast footage of the unfortunate creature lying motionless in shallow water for hours as men in diving suits doused it with water using kayak paddles.
Tide charts have become a national concern, with rare moments of exhausted whales spouting water or flapping their fins being reported in breaking news.
cushions and pontoons
The wave of sympathy turned to public outrage on April 1, when local authorities announced they believed the severely injured and suffering animal could no longer be saved.

Activists immediately staged a beach protest on the island of Poel, near Wismar, demanding further rescue efforts, although by then the animal had been located.
Various government officials, veterinarians, and green organizations received hate mail.
“Citizens participating in the debate react emotionally, but scientists are trying to argue rationally,” Stegbauer, a sociologist at the University of Frankfurt, told AFP. “The two approaches collide.”
A conspiracy theory has surfaced online that the whales were deliberately driven into the Baltic Sea and that the whole thing was orchestrated by a cabal of scientists, authorities and environmental groups.
Till Backhaus, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania’s environment minister, said some rescue workers had received death threats.
Despite experts warning that trying to save the creature would only cause more suffering, two billionaires embarked on an elaborate rescue plan using inflatable cushions and pontoons.
“I believe that life is the most important thing for us, and I simply felt that something had to be done,” Walter Ganz, founder of a major electronics store chain, told the Neue Osnabrücker newspaper.
“I managed to survive until I died.”
The news magazine Der Spiegel published a lengthy report on the local church on Paul Island. The guestbook was no longer filled with personal thoughts and prayers, but messages about Timmy.

“You can do it, brother!” Please read one book.
Veterinarian Janine Barvan Gemmert was heckled by a man who had broken through the cordon during a press conference about the final rescue operation.
“We have a right to know why this whale is being controlled to the point of death,” he demanded.
Psychiatrist Bowin Banderoo said in an interview with Welt TV that the whale may have become a symbol of widespread and deep dissatisfaction among Germans with their struggling economy and politics in general.
“The government is seen as incompetent,” he said. “We can’t solve this problem, just like we can’t solve many other everyday problems.”
A commentary in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper argued that the story focuses on the plight of a single animal, largely ignoring more complex ecological issues, and shows how modern society has lost touch with nature.
“The reality is that this exhausted animal…is not being saved for its own sake, much less for the sake of the preservation of the species. It is being saved to keep us from seeing live webcam footage of its death.”
