House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) warned on Sunday that “something sinister may be afoot” after 11 scientists, mostly associated with the U.S. nuclear and space research programs, were reported to have died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances, raising urgent national security concerns.
Comer told “Fox & Friends Weekend” that when he first heard about the disappearances, it sounded like “some kind of crazy conspiracy theory.” However, after seeing the details of the incident, he changed his mind and began alerting multiple government agencies.
“We’ve notified the Department of the Army, the FBI, NASA, the Department of Energy, and they want to know everything we know about what happened to these scientists, because those four agencies are primarily the agencies that these 11 people were affiliated with. And we want to piece this together.”
Comer said he plans to present the heads of those offices to Congress, but first sent the letter to give them time to make sure their testimony would not compromise the possibility of a confidential investigation.
He urged anyone with information to report it to the oversight committee, and said those involved in the U.S. nuclear program should be vigilant because of the potential security risks to the nation.
“We know that there are many countries around the world that want our knowledge and our nuclear capabilities, and these are the people who were on the front lines of that, and they are dead or missing.”
Those missing or dead include Amy Eskridge, 34, a researcher behind the experiment. Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William “Neil” McCasland, 68 years old. NASA scientist Monica Jacinto Reza, 60 years old. contractor Steven Garcia, 48; Astrophysicist Karl Grillmare, 47 years old. Nuno Loureiro, a 47-year-old physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. NASA engineer Frank Maiwald, 61 years old. Los Alamos employees Melissa Casias, 53, and Anthony Chavez, 79. NASA researcher Michael David Hicks, 59 years old. and pharmaceutical scientist Jason Thomas (45).
In response to the new national attention, President Donald Trump has vowed to investigate the mysterious disappearances and deaths of these scientists.
“I hope it’s random, but we’ll find out within the next week and a half,” President Trump told reporters Thursday. “I just left a meeting on the subject.”
Additionally, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) previously told Fox News Digital that it was investigating the incident.
“NNSA is aware of reports regarding employees at our laboratories, plants and facilities and is investigating the matter.”
